This premiere recording by the sixteen-voice ensemble Canzona features six motets of the great German Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach [1685-1750]. These motets are to choirs what the six suites are to cellists, the partitas are to violinists, the trio sonatas are to organists - a measure of ultimate technical and artistic achievement! Bach makes tremendous demands on the virtuosity, sensitivity, and stamina of the performers. He uses all the devices of his compositional writing, together with the brilliant exploitation of the double-choir sonorities, in the sublime expression of his deepest religious convictions. Yet no technical analysis is required for performers - and listeners alike to thrill to Bach's dance-like joy in praise of God.
